Mel Phillips' - The "Melman"

      The man , the myth, the legend . . .

Mel Phillips, former Naval Aviator, graduated from Amarillo High, Amarillo College and the University of Texas in Austin. Mel, an avid sportsman, hunter and tournament bass fisherman, is actively involved in the outdoor promotions with a weekly radio show, weekly newspaper column, a hunting club, and a very successful annual sportsman's show.

SOUTHWEST OUTDOORS-the radio edition, enters its twentieth year on KGNC TalkRadio and has been honored with numerous awards including the Texas Outdoors Writer's Association best in Outdoor radio category. His broadcast covers the Texas Panhandle and Rolling Plains, western Oklahoma, and eastern New Mexico. Each show features live interviews, listener call-ins, lake reports, and hunting news. Other popular segments on the show include a new products segment, a tip-of-the-week, bargain-of-the-week, and Mel's unique sportsman's calendar.

SOUTHWEST OUTDOORS-since 1990 newspaper column has become one of the longest running independently syndicated outdoors column in Texas. Among the many journalistic honors Southwest Outdoor placed second behind Houston Chronicle in Outdoor Columns by the Texas Outdoors Writer's Association. Each week some 75,000 households find the latest and best information about the outdoor world. Mel's feature articles have appeared in Amarillo Globe-News, High Plains Outdoors Journal, Texas Outdoors Journal, and Honey Hole magazine.

OUTDOOR WORLD is the largest sportsman show between Dallas and Denver. Last year's show featured 100 exhibitors and attracted more than 12,000 people from a five state marketing area.

The economic impact of this show exceeds $2,000,000 each year and is second only to the Amarillo Farm and Ranch show in attendance and floor space required.

Special OUTDOOR WORLD attractions include kid's fishing tank, free kid's fishing seminars with free Zebco rods for 100 youngsters, and special appearances by celebrity anglers like JIMMY HOUSTON, Cliff Craft, Kathy Maegers, Jay Yelas, Don Iovino, Stan Fagerstrom, Wally Marshall, and Tommy Biffle.

One of the special highlights of the annual show is the announcement of the members of the Outdoor World Pro-Staff and the Angler of the Year. Congratulations to Laura Elkins of Amarillo who was named 2008 Angler of the Year. FUN FISHING TOURNAMENTS - - For the past twenty years, Mel has served as Tournament Director for the largest catch-and-release fishing tournament organization in West Texas. Prize money in excess of $350,000 has been paid out to local anglers. Entry fee for these local lake events is only $30 and all kids under 17 fish free.
